Naming names

So how do you choose your character names? My characters in my current WIP are maturing into their names. The MC was a name first and then a character and she is now chatting to me in my head, evolving and becoming her name. The other characters have all had different names previously. I think the current crop is the last.

What do you do? Get the names then create the characters? Vice versa? Do you think of fabulously silly names and use them? Are they eminently sensible? Are they reflective of their personalities? What makes a great character name – could Attacus Finch have been Joe Smith and still have been such a great man?

Mine are a mixture of plausible, trendy, unusual and alliterative and at the moment I like them!

I’d love to hear what other authors do.
